Killer Web Content November 18, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — elisemdesigns @ 7:16 pm

Whaaaaa? I really can’t believe that there were headlines that got 0% of the vote for which headline was the best. That is crazy! Especially when the study was done over a broad range of people. That tells you a lot about what people are looking for on the web. I may just add a headline to my website that says “for every $50 you spend, choose a FREE necklace!” I wonder how many more hits I will get with the word “FREE” on my site. It seems like the human race has suddenly developed ADD . . . I dunno if that’s a good thing or a bad thing . . . we don’t want to wait for ANYTHING anymore. What about, “Good things come to those who wait” or “Patience is a virtue” . . . I supposed those old adages need some serious revision. If we don’t see what we want in 10 seconds we hit BACK. I wonder what we’re missing when we do that . . . hmmm.

CSS layout practice November 10, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — elisemdesigns @ 8:43 pm

I have a love/hate relationship with CSS. I’m getting better at it I suppose and you can do so much with it, but it can be tempermental. I created a very basic css layout with only some minor changes to the original template. The hardest part was finding the Adobe Dreamweaver CS3\Configuration\BuiltIn\Layouts folder. It took me 45 minutes.

Chapter 16 November 5, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — elisemdesigns @ 9:42 pm

I had a REALLY hard time with this. The book is misleading in some areas . . . I had to move the templates around to get them to be recognized, and then I got totally lost and couldn’t finish the assignment. I did my best, but I just think this chapter wasn’t written very well. I can usually follow along with no problems, but not this time . . . that’s for sure.

Foge Reconstruction November 5, 2008

I need more help in transitioning a FW doc to a DW doc. I got all of my roll overs to work in my png file, but they don’t work in my html file. I thought exporting created the html page, but I guess that’s not so. My html page doesn’t work at all. I’ll have to have more practice before I can tackle this.

Chapter 7 October 29, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — elisemdesigns @ 9:16 pm

The more I use CSS, the more comfortable I am becoming with it. I do need to rework Chapter 6 and read over every little thing, but Chapter 7′s exercises seemed pretty straight forward. I love being able to manipulate the text in such an efficient way. I did not have the Helvetica font on my computer for the font lists exercise so I replaced it with Gill Sans.

Reading Week 8 October 22, 2008

I personally LOVE the AIGA example of using images to create unsymmetrical grids. Grids are very important in both print design and web design, but they can become boring if you don’t add some flavor. True, some websites benefit from being very geometric and adhering to the typical grid layout . . . like most editorial sites, but to really create eye catching design schemes, little variations here and there are important. In the article regarding CSS and typography I found this statement to be interesting: “When words are a significant part of your Web site, they deserve a significant part of your attention and have a significant impact on the design.” I’m always talking about how your content should speak the loudest, not the way the actual words looks, but it’s true . . . if text is the major part of your page, it should be pleasing to look at. I also LOVE the idea of creating “scannable text” . . . I’m one of those users who usually scans the page for the important parts first so I totally understand how this technique can be helpful. I’m a firm believer in less is more when it comes to writing . . . condensing ideas and highlighting main points is the ideal in keeping the reader’s interest and not boring them to tears!
